PE And Sport Premium For Primary Schools

At Masham Church of England Primary School we, the staff and children, believe:

Physical education should aim to develop and build upon each child’s physical fitness and key skills year on year.

We will provide a wide range of sporting options so that each child can find a sport they feel they are achieving in and, importantly enjoy wholeheartedly. We will teach our children how to apply the key skills of physical education to ensure they feel they are achieving and progressing.

We will provide ample opportunities for children to compete as a team both in school and locally. We do not underestimate the enjoyment of winning and indeed the lessons which can be learnt from losing. Our children will learn respect for the game, the players and its rules and importantly show good sportsmanship at all times.

We believe that through PE the children will further develop stronger bonds with each other. They will learn how to pick each other up when down, encourage each other to do better and learn how to push their limits.

We want to nurture and instil a love of all the different forms of physical education. We will teach the children the importance of being active and eating healthily. Ultimately, we want to help each child to develop a lifelong positive attitude towards being healthy, fit and knowing which elements of sport makes them shine.

Our aim is to deliver 2 hours of quality PE every week to all pupils.

What is the Sports Premium?

This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools and it must improve the quality of sport and PE for our pupils. Please see strategy document below.

This is how we have allocated it and the impact it has had:

Water Coolers – to provide fresh chilled water to keep our children healthy and hydrated when being active

PE and Sports Day equipment – to celebrate effort, excellence and participation across the school.

Active Maths and English – to embed sport and physical activity across the curriculum

Forest School Training – to enable every child in our school to experience outdoor learning

Sporting Start and Simon Carson Sports – to give our children and staff access to professional sports activities, extra curricular sessions and resources

Survival Workshops – to develop skills in outdoor adventurous activities

For a more detailed and cost allocated record of how we have utilised the Sports Premium funding this year please enquire in the school office.

Historic reporting

2014 / 2015 Funding and its impact

The allocation for 2014/15 was £8,440

Sports premium funding was spent on CPD for staff, transportation to a range of sporting events, high quality PE equipment for all ages, training for PE subject leader subsidising clubs. The impact of this was that pupils and staff worked with a range of coaches and athletes for sports including: cricket, tag-rugby, athletics, football, bob-sleigh, tennis, dance, orienteering and outdoor education.

2015 / 2016 Funding and its impact

The allocation for 2015/16 was £8,470

Staff continue to enjoy team teaching with sporting professionals, this has enabled PE lessons to remain outstanding and given the staff the confidence to teach a variety of skills to the children. We have provided a wide selection of sporting opportunities for each child both in and out of school. This therefore has given each child the chance to find an element of PE where they feel they are succeeding. From Early Years to Year 6, each child has a personal fitness book to track their fitness journey as they progress through the school. We have ensured that the ‘Wilderness’ has been fitted with an anti-slip surface; enabling children to fully access the outdoor education aspect of PE, specifically orienteering, fine and gross motor skills and coordination. Importantly, the children at Masham Church of England Primary feel that PE has helped to boost their self-esteem and fitness and also helped them to understand how we can all work together to improve and succeed.

2016/17 Funding and its impact

This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools and it must improve the quality of sport and PE for our pupils. This academic year Masham has been allocated £8400.

The money will be used so that:

  • All children will find an aspect of physical education which inspires them – tag rugby, karate, archery, squash, dance, skipping, boxing to name a few.
  • That we maintain, and aim to increase, the number of children who are given the opportunity to compete in a range of sporting opportunities. We will ensure we enter as many cluster led competitions allowing children to work as a team to compete and support each other.
  • All staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development. All teaching staff have the opportunity to attend professional development courses and improve upon their own skill levels in teaching PE. In addition, qualified sports leaders will come into school and team teach with our staff in order to improve quality of provision.
  • The pupils have access to high quality resources.
