Welcome to Cover Class!
Cover Class is made up of our oldest children in Year 5 and 6. they are taught by Miss Joyce , supported by Mrs Foster and Mrs Owen-Stanford, and hold lots of roles of responsibility in school such as Collective Worship leaders, monitors and play leaders. Cover Class love keeping fit and active and are great team players.
Here in Cover, Year 5 and Year 6 learn and grow together. Our class is taught by Miss Joyce. On a Thursday afternoon, Mrs Tattersall teaches us too.
Mrs Owen-Stanford, Mrs Foster, and Mrs Knowles support children’s learning across Key Stage 2. They run catch-up programmes and ensure that children’s well-being and individual needs are met. Working closely with the class teachers, we come together as a team to make sure every child feels happy, supported, and challenged.
In Years 5 and 6, we build on the strong foundations children already have from their time in Swinney and Burn classes. Our classroom is a supportive and encouraging environment where we all feel safe to ‘have a go’. We are working on metacognition in our classroom to support us with our learning and to build our independence and confidence. Whether in Maths, Religious Education, Music or English, we work hard, try our best and know that mistakes mean we are learning.
PE
PE takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays – on these days children should come to school in PE kit (house colour t-shirt, black/navy shorts/joggers/leggings, trainers/pumps and PE hoodie/school jumper). For safety reasons, earrings and other jewellery must be removed before PE sessions, and long hair tied back.
On Wednesdays, an external provider leads our PE lessons, bringing a wealth of expertise.
From September 13th until October half term, Thursday’s PE will be swimming at Catterick Pool. During this period, please ensure your child brings their swimming kit. Further information about Swimming to follow.
Learning at Home
Children are expected to read regularly at home. This should be recorded in their Reading Record, with an adult’s signature. Fostering a love of reading has endless benefits – it fuels imagination, broadens vocabulary, strengthens comprehension skills, and opens up new worlds.
Children will receive new spellings on Monday, which will be tested the following Monday. They should practise their spellings regularly, including through completing their weekly spelling homework and returning this to school.
We also encourage support at home with times tables, as they form a vital foundation for many areas of maths. Secure knowledge of times tables (and the related division facts) builds confidence and improves attainment. To help make this fun and engaging, children have access to Times Table Rock Stars, and additional resources can be provided by school – please just ask if needed. We are looking forward to a fabulous year, and to seeing what wonderful things the children in Cover class achieve!
Best wishes,
Team Cover
