Welcome to Burn Class!
Burn Class is made up of Year 3 and Year 4 children. Their teacher is Katey Smithson; Mrs Foster and Mrs Owen-Stanford work with them too. Burn Class love art and are never happier than when they are being creative!
In Burn Class, Year 3 and Year 4 learn together. Our class is taught by Mrs Smithson on Mondays,
Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and by Mrs Tattersall on Tuesdays.
Mrs Owen-Stanford, Mrs Foster, and Mrs Knowles support children’s learning across Key Stage 2. They run catch-up programmes and ensure that children’s well-being and individual needs are met. Working closely with the class teachers, we come together as a team to make sure every child feels happy, supported, and challenged.
We use Metacognition across the curriculum to help us become independent, engaged problem solvers and learners. Our aim is to develop a love of learning, while encouraging one another to always try our best. We support our peers, celebrate each other’s successes, and make sure we put a smile on someone’s face. Whether in Maths, Religious Education, Music, or English, we work hard and support one another to succeed.
Years 3 and 4 are the perfect time to build upon the knowledge and skills we already have while learning lots of exciting new things.
PE
PE will take place twice per week. Children should come to school in their PE kit on those days. For safety reasons, earrings and other jewellery must be removed before PE sessions, and long hair should be tied back.
Please support us by ensuring jewellery is removed before school.
On Wednesdays, an external provider leads our PE lessons, bringing a wealth of expertise. On Thursdays, PE is taught by Mrs Tattersall, who brings lots of energy and fresh ideas.
Later in the Autumn term, children will attend swimming sessions at Catterick Pool on Thursday afternoons (further information to follow).
Supporting Learning at Home
Children are expected to read regularly at home. This should be recorded in their Reading Record, with an adult’s signature. Fostering a love of reading has endless benefits – it fuels imagination, broadens vocabulary, strengthens comprehension skills, and opens up new worlds.
Children will receive new spellings on Tuesdays, which will be tested the following Tuesday. They also have access to Spelling Shed to practice, and weekly spelling homework should be returned to school.
We also encourage support at home with times tables, as they form a vital foundation for many areas of maths. Secure knowledge of times tables (and the related division facts) builds confidence and improves attainment. To help make this fun and engaging, children have access to Times Table Rock Stars, and additional resources can be provided by school – please just ask if needed.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead and can’t wait to see all the wonderful things the children in our class will achieve!
Best wishes,
The Burn Class Team
